A Friend
If a
friend is
developing
dementia, it
can be hard to
know how to
respond.
They may
try to hide
how confused
they are, or
when they’ve
forgotten
something.
Days
out
Shopping
Photos,
music and
history can
inspire
conversation.
Friends, family
and neighbours
can work together
to keep the
person safe and
independent.
A friendly word or
regular offer of help
can stop them
feeling alone.
People with
dementia may
be more confused
than they let on.
Approach
them from
the front.
Use their name,
if you know
them, so they
realise you’re
not a stranger.
"I don’t
often see
you in this
street."
"You’ve been
coming to my
shop for years."
Unless it’s
essential for
their safety,
avoid guiding
them.
They may
feel threatened
or pressured.
"Can I be of
assistance?"
"You need
to come
this way."
Be ready
to listen.
It may take
someone time to find
a train of thought.
It’s okay if some
of the things they say
don’t make sense.
People who
forget facts still
remember feelings.
A friendly chat
can make someone
happy…
…even if they can't
remember the
details.
